Your Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon!

Your excellences - members of the diplomatic community!

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Allow me to warmly welcome Mr. Ban Ki-moon and all participants of the Astana Economic Forum on the land of Kazakhstan!

Dear Mr. Ban Ki-moon! In our country, we highly value your contribution to the development of the world. It is very symbolic that this Forum takes place in the year when we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UN's work in Kazakhstan and the year when Kazakhstan presided over the UN Security Council contributing to solving global problems facing humanity.

Thanks to your active and fruitful work as Secretary General, the United Nations initiated such global programs as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Program and many others. Al Farabi KazNU was honored to lead the global hub of the UNAI and actively contributed to the discussion and implementation of the SDGs at many international venues, including the global G-Global platform.

In the six years of our fruitful work, KazNU has accumulated vast experience in the field of international innovation research and educational programs on sustainable development and global citizenship, namely:

1) KazNU comprehensively develops international cooperation and partnership and became the only university in the CIS to present its very own program "Green Bridge Through Generations" at the UN Forum RIO + 20 in 2012, where sustainable energy issues were discussed;

2) The University actively supports the internationalization of education and the training of specialists in the field of sustainable development in cooperation with the world's leading universities, such as Columbia University;

3) We continue to work with young people to preserve peace and prevent extremism. An example is our work on the organization of seven international conferences "Model UN - New Silk Road", which is one of the largest conferences, which today involves representatives of more than 20 countries;

4) KazNU in every possible way stimulates the dialogue of civilizations as a component of sustainability, and we actively work at the UNESCO Chairs for Sustainable Development and the University, it has been a great honor to become the Central Asian hub for sustainable development of the UNESCO UNITWIN program.

5) Today I have the high honor to officially announce that in May 2018, at the UN headquarters in New York, al-Farabi KazNU received a certificate extending the status of the Global Hub of the UNAI on Sustainability for 2018-2020. At the same time, our university together with the UN Alliance of Civilizations held a conference on issues of global citizenship.

Using our rich accumulated experience allows us to take a decision on the establishing the Institute for Sustainable Development at Al Farabi KazNU. And just yesterday we signed a cooperation agreement with the GGI, which you are heading.

I was honored with this high tribune of the AEF to officially announce the establishment of the Institute for Sustainable Development at Al Farabi KazNU!

We suggest assigning the name of an outstanding politician and the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, to the Institute for Sustainable Development. We are proud of the fact that you, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, are an honorary professor of KazNU and we invite you to the Institute as honorary chairman of the International Advisory Council.

Allow me to thank you for agreeing to associate your name with the Institute for Sustainable Development!

We want to assure you that Ban Ki-moon Institute of Sustainable Development at Al Farabi KazNU will make a worthy contribution to addressing global problems and challenges of modern civilization, and will become a reliable partner in all your initiatives in building a stable and sustainable world and implementing the SDGs.

Thank you for attention!

Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development
