Preliminary meeting of the rector of KazNU with foreign partners to discuss a joint project on Turkology
A meeting of rector Mutanov G.M.with delegacies from the UK (University of Cambridge) and the Republic of Turkey was held 04.04.2016 in al-Farabi KazNU. Among the guests were Charles Melvill - University of Cambridge, Dean of the faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern, Firouza Melvill the University of Cambridge, Director of the esearch centre (Cambridge Centre for Persian Studies), Prof. Dr. Bekir karliga - Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister of Turkey, PhD, Chairman of the national coordinating Committee of Turkey by the UN Alliance of civilizations, Aydin Cemerlic - Coordinator for international relations at the Foundation of the Turkic world, Ibrahim Akgün - cultural worker, Manager of the Farabi project and Altai Alper - Vice-Consul of the Consulate General of Turkey in Kazakhstan.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss proposals for the development of Turkology in the University of Cambridge, namely the creation of a Centre of Turkology and training of specialists in Turkic studies. The Turkish side replied that welcomes the proposed development of Turkology in the University of Cambridge and will try to help in any way, because studying of Turkology is not only learning the language but also the study of the history, culture, politics. The parties also decided to start with the study of Turkic languages and modern Turkish language at the University of Cambridge. In addition, it is necessary to develop the concept, the idea of joint research projects and then to address the issue of financing of these projects. It is also necessary to study and organize materials in libraries and the collections of the University of Cambridge. Scientists of the KazNU are invited to come to Cambridge for a specified period and to participate in the implementation of this work.
It was decided to establish a working group for the development of the centre for Central Asian studies at the University of Cambridge and the implementation of projects in the field of Turkology.
